TV Mounting Above the Fireplace in Dallas-Area Homes
Fireplace TV installations are popular across Dallas suburbs but require careful heat management and proper hardware. Here is how our technicians handle them in DFW homes.
Dallas Fireplace Styles and Mounting Considerations
Fireplaces are a staple in Dallas-area homes, from the stacked stone surrounds in Southlake estates to the sleek linear gas fireplaces in newer Frisco builds. Each style presents different mounting challenges. Traditional brick fireplaces with a wood mantel are the most common across established neighborhoods in Arlington, Irving, and Garland. These typically have a brick chimney structure behind the drywall above the mantel, which means you are mounting into brick or a combination of brick and wood framing. Newer homes in Frisco and McKinney often feature a gas fireplace with a shiplap or tile surround that extends to the ceiling. These are usually built on a standard wood-framed wall with the fireplace insert mounted at the base, making the area above the mantel straightforward drywall-over-studs. Knowing what is behind the wall surface is the first and most important step. Your technician will assess the wall construction before selecting the right mounting hardware to ensure a secure installation regardless of the fireplace type.
Heat Clearance and TV Protection
The number one concern with above-fireplace mounting is heat. Gas fireplaces produce less direct updraft than wood-burning fireplaces, but they still generate enough heat to damage electronics if the TV is mounted too close. The general rule is at least 6 to 12 inches of clearance between the top of the mantel and the bottom edge of the TV. For wood-burning fireplaces, we recommend even more clearance and sometimes suggest installing a mantel heat shield, a small shelf that deflects rising heat away from the screen. In Dallas homes where the fireplace is primarily decorative and rarely used at full output, the heat risk is lower, but we still follow the same clearance guidelines. A tilting mount is essential for above-fireplace installations because the TV is higher than normal seated eye level. Tilting the screen downward by 10 to 15 degrees compensates for the elevated position and significantly reduces neck strain. Our fireplace TV mounting guide covers heat management in detail for every fireplace type.
Cord Concealment on Fireplace Walls
Cord concealment above a fireplace is more involved than on a standard drywall wall. If the wall above the mantel is brick, cables cannot be routed through the wall without significant masonry work. In these cases, we use a paintable surface-mounted raceway that follows the mortar lines of the brick, making it virtually invisible. For drywall walls above a fireplace, standard in-wall cord concealment with a power bridge kit works perfectly. The power cable routes through a UL-listed electrical box behind the TV down to an outlet near the baseboard or behind the mantel. HDMI and other signal cables run through the same wall cavity in a low-voltage bracket. In homes where the fireplace has a built-in media niche or alcove below the mantel, we can route all cables into that space, keeping all your devices hidden behind a cabinet door while the TV sits clean and wire-free above. This setup is especially common in newer Dallas-area builds where builders include these niches as a standard feature.
