TV Mounting on Concrete Block Walls: A Las Vegas Homeowner's Guide

Concrete block walls are standard in Las Vegas homes. Here is what you need to know about mounting a TV on block walls with the right anchors and drilling methods.

Why Las Vegas Uses Concrete Block Construction

If you have lived in the Las Vegas Valley for any amount of time, you know that most homes are built with concrete masonry unit (CMU) block exterior walls. This construction method has been the standard in Southern Nevada for decades, and for good reason. CMU block is fire-resistant, which matters in a desert environment where wildfires can threaten communities near the mountain edges. It provides excellent thermal mass, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it slowly at night, which helps moderate indoor temperatures in a climate where summer highs exceed 110 degrees regularly. And it stands up to the Valley's occasional high winds and dust storms better than frame-and-stucco construction. For homeowners in Henderson, Summerlin, North Las Vegas, and every other part of the Valley, this means the wall where you want to mount your TV may be solid concrete block rather than the wood-framed drywall that most TV mounting guides assume. This is not a problem at all, in fact, block walls are one of the strongest mounting surfaces available, but it does require different tools and hardware than a standard installation.

Tools and Hardware for Block Wall Mounting

Mounting a TV on a concrete block wall requires three things that a standard drywall installation does not: a hammer drill, masonry drill bits, and masonry-rated anchors. A standard cordless drill will struggle with or fail to penetrate CMU block. A hammer drill combines rotational drilling with a percussive hammering action that chews through concrete and block efficiently. We use SDS-plus hammer drills with carbide-tipped masonry bits sized to match our anchor hardware. For the anchors themselves, we primarily use Tapcon concrete screws or wedge-type sleeve anchors, depending on the block type and the load requirements. Tapcon screws thread directly into the concrete through a pre-drilled pilot hole, creating a strong mechanical connection. They are ideal for lighter loads and tilting or fixed mounts with TVs up to about 55 inches. For heavier TVs and full-motion articulating mounts, we step up to sleeve anchors or expansion bolts that spread a wider clamping force inside the block. These are rated for the higher loads and the torque forces created by a full-motion mount extended away from the wall with a heavy TV attached.

Hollow Block vs Solid Block Considerations

Not all CMU block is the same. Standard concrete blocks are hollow, with two or three internal cavities separated by webs. If your anchor happens to hit a hollow cavity, a standard concrete screw may not hold properly because there is insufficient material for the threads to grip. Our technicians test the block composition during pilot drilling to determine whether they are hitting a solid web, a hollow cavity, or a grouted core. Many Las Vegas homes have partially grouted block walls where the cores at regular intervals are filled with concrete and rebar for structural reinforcement. Hitting a grouted core is ideal for anchoring. When we encounter a hollow core, we use toggle-style masonry anchors that expand behind the block face, gripping the interior of the cavity for a strong hold. This is a common situation in homes across Enterprise , Spring Valley , and the older sections of Las Vegas near the core of the Valley. Our technicians carry multiple anchor types to every job specifically because block wall conditions vary from one spot on the wall to another, and the right solution depends on what the drill reveals during the pilot holes.
